The great thinkers of the 19th century wanted the day when piracy and illegal wars by groups and individuals had reached an end... but to them that meant a fully civilized world in which everyone knew their rights and limitations. By putting such hard press on piracy, we missed the point of predatory warfare: it exists as part of the human condition of forming societies and having those that wish to overturn all societies to have their way.

The 'Evil Empire' was Western based in its Communism and totalitarian via society, yet still civilized, even in its nefarious dealings. It dealt with terrorists immediately and in lethal manner. The US and the rest of the West did not do that, and we believed that the power game was everything. That was Fukiyama's 'End of History' which ignored that it requires civilized views to retain working society and nations, and that groups had arisen that wanted their own society globally, and would tear down nations to get that.

In running from Tehran, Beirut three times, Somalia, and doing nothing due to all the killings and bombings against the US government, armed forces, citizenry and trade, we suffered a slow but increasing lethal series of attacks for decades. The USMC would wade ashore in the midst of the Spanish Civil War to rescue Americans, yet it fled from Beirut under direct attack by predators in 1983.

It is time to let go of the 20th century, that not only introduced us heavily to 'genocide' but 'mass killing' based on ideology and religion. It doesn't take resorting to becoming the full antithesis of our enemies to be civilized, we can stand against them for the rights of individuals to have religion and yet attack those that wish global destruction for their religion or for none at all.

No law, no treaty, nothing prevents that... and, in fact, our duties as a nation REQUIRE that we name predators and confront them, and ask our fellow nations to put an end to them, or ask for help in doing so... or be seen as a haven for the Enemies of Mankind. That is our duty as a nation and each nation has that duty, also. We fail in naming them as do others, because that reminds us that we are a responsible nation as part of the law of nations. We are attacked again and again, even today and not just in war zones, but in nations that have no ability to stop these predators of all stripes: Islamic, separatist, nationalist, communist and leftist. The laundry list of those that have killed Americans without cause, without warrant is long... very long and stretching long before al Qaeda including organizations like: PLO, ETA, FARC, Shining Path, Red Army/Faction/Group of all sorts, and even just criminal organizations seeking to kill for their own advantage and warn America that it will face consequences to face lawlessness.

They make war upon us, these predators... yet we do not name them as predators, outlaws, brigands, bandits, pirates. Too passe for the modern world!

And we will die because of it if we remember that to have a modern world it must be defended. We can barely defend enough to weaken one group of these predators, and while we are distracted the rest go on to kill as they want.

The 20th century is a boat anchor, heavy and headed to the abyss. We had best let go of it and soon, or we will be history along with it, and others will write our epitath of failure.A Jacksonianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07607888697879327120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24766932.post-18322395414668524902007-09-30T02:21:00.000Z2007-09-30T02:21:00.000ZWhat is our problem?
